Meet the adventurer: Charlie Walker

Fri, 12 May | 7.30pm | £18/£12 | 12+

In February 2022, British explorer, Charlie Walker, was just three days into his latest expedition in Russia when the country invaded Ukraine, exposing him to the whims of the police. Charlie’s initial plan was to hike several hundred miles along the frozen surfaces of Arctic rivers to reach the port town of Tiksi on the North coast of Siberia. The aim was to reach remote settlements of the indigenous Sakha and Evenki peoples and witness their way of life in the harsh northern winter conditions. However, as the weeks passed and the war in Ukraine rumbled on, the old Soviet-era suspicions of outsiders gradually returned and Charlie was increasingly on the radar of the authorities. Join us for an evening with Charlie recounting his tales of exploration and passion for unchartered places.

Charlie Walker is a British adventurer and writer who specialises in long distance, human-powered expeditions and has travelled by bicycle, foot, horse and dugout canoe.

Rich Hall: Shot from Cannons

Thu, 18 May | 8pm | £17

Fresh on the heels of his critically acclaimed memoirs, Nailing It, Montana’s transatlantic messenger returns with new rants, knife-edge observations, thrilling musical interludes and an ever-formidable knack for laughs on the fly. The Glenturret Series: Shooglenifty

Fri, 19 May | 7.30pm | £26

The Glenturret Series is sponsored by The Glenturret, supercharging our music programme which attracts the best musicians, bands and performers to Strathearn Arts.

Shooglenifty was formed in 1990 by musicians from the Scottish Highlands, Orkney and Edinburgh. Its bright spark was the idea of fusing traditional and traditional-sounding melodies with the beats and basslines of a mixed bag of more contemporary influences. As happy playing a small highland village hall as they are on an outdoor festival stage playing to tens of thousands, the Shoogles (as they’re known to their fans) have promoted Scottish music all over the world for three decades.

On sparkling form and armed with a brand new album of fresh tunes, released during lockdown, the Shoogles will entertain as only they can.

Fred MacAulay

Fri, 26 May | 7.30pm | £18

Expect to hear more tales of Lockdown weddings, gags about complying with the regulations, getting back to work after a long lay - off, things that bound us together .... (like finding out that your bottle bins were too small), the tribulations of getting a train ticket refund, nuisance phone calls ...and ... OH YES...becoming a grandparent for the first time in his sixties (unusually late in Scotland)!

Roman Holiday (U)

Sun, 28 May | 4pm | £6/£4

William Wyler’s much-much loved romantic classic celebrates its landmark 70th anniversary. An adventure-seeking princess on an official visit to Rome slips away from her chaperones to explore the city with a brash newspaperman, then falls in love with him.

Tokyo Stories (12A)

Thu, 1 Jun | 7.30pm | £15/£10

A thrilling encounter with one of the world’s great art capitals.

Based on a major exhibition at the Ashmolean in Oxford, Tokyo Stories spans 400 years of incredibly dynamic art – ranging from the delicate woodblock prints of Hokusai and Hiroshige, to Pop Art posters, contemporary photography, Manga, film, and brand-new artworks that were created on the streets.

The exhibition was a smash-hit five-star success and brought a younger and more diverse audience to the museum. The film uses the exhibition as a launchpad to travel to Tokyo itself, and explore the art and artists of the city more fully.

This film tells the stories of the artists and people who have made Tokyo famous for its boundless drive for the new and innovative.

“Tokyo has a powerful engine that just doesn’t stop. There is an energy, a particular floating power in Tokyo. Whatever happens, this city gets rebuilt again and continues to move forwards.” Machida Kumi
